The geographic zone of the Coteaux de Peyriac IGP extends over 24 towns, 22 in the Aude department and 2 in the Hérault department. This IGP not only finds itself in the heart of the Minervois, but comprises the central part of the territory where the Clamoux and Argent Double tributaries of the Aude River traverse the land. In the south, the Coteaux de Peyriac is bordered by the Canal du Midi, classified as a UNESCO World Heritage site; in the north, it is bordered by the Black Mountains, which is also the location of the Caunes-Minervois village, famous for its red-colored marble used in the construction of Versailles and the Paris Opera House.
The most characteristic soil is comprised of the terraces of stony earth from the Quaternary period (in the north and the west), sandstone and sandy marlstone (in the central zone), and chalky sandstone (in the west).
The Mediterranean climate is characterized by a considerable balminess and a relative dryness. The area of this IGP has always been a zone of continual movement, promoting the planting of vineyards and the important environment for commerce, strengthened by trade along the Canal du Midi in the 19th century.
A strong synergy between the wine-making economy and tourism is constantly progressing and promoting the commercial momentum of the Coteaux de Peyriac IGP.
